Dental bonding can be done by a regular dentist or by a prosthodontist. Dental bonding is a procedure which deals with the restoration of a damaged tooth or teeth and with the improvement of a person’s smile. It corrects dental flaws that are causing the person to feel less confident and that affects the functionality of a tooth when it comes to chewing and speaking.

Teeth bonding is a common treatment to repair a decayed tooth, to make a tooth look longer, to change the tooth’s shape, to close teeth gaps, to change the color of one’s teeth, and to fix a chipped or broken tooth. It is basically used as an alternative material or as a replacement to amalgam dental filling. There are cases when the roots of our teeth are somewhat exposed due to an underlying cause or disease. In these cases, dental bonding can be used to cover and protect the tooth chamber from bacteria seepage.

Dental bonding can be beneficial to a person who is on a tight budget but wants to undergo a dental procedure. It is a less expensive alternative compared to other dental treatments that aim to protect the remaining teeth structure or to improve tooth appearance. Dental bonding is considered to be the easiest kind of cosmetic dental procedure to date. The procedure can be done on the same day unless several teeth need bonding.

With this treatment, there is no need to remove much of the tooth enamel as well as injecting a local anesthesia unless bonding is used as filling material to cover a tooth cavity. But dental bonding, like dental crowns, is not that resistant to stains. The bonding materials are also not as durable as dental crowns and dental veneers. These can easily crack or chip when chewing hard foods. Dentists use dental bonding more for temporary restoration or for small cosmetic adjustments. These are just a few of the limitations when it comes to restoring or fixing dental problems with composite bonding resin material.

Nevertheless, taking care of your bonded tooth or teeth is a must to prevent from damage and to prolong its serviceable life. Oral hygiene such as brushing twice daily and flossing should be done as this will help the bonding material to last long. If you have the habit of biting hard objects like pens or ice, try to avoid it as this will chip the bonding resin. Typically, dental bonding lasts for three to ten years before replacing them. The treatment will also cost about $100 to $400 for every tooth. Since there are insurance companies that do not cover dental bonding, it is better to ask the insurance representative about the policy coverage. Yet, other insurance companies cover the entire charge or they cover half of the total charge.
